What is confidence in entrepreneurship?

What is confidence, anyways? And why is it so important in entrepreneurship?

Have you ever thought about that? We throw these words around but it’s so interesting to actually stop for a moment and think about what they mean.

An example of trust-based selling

An example of trust-based selling

Improvised jazz has to be one of the most courageous art forms.

Spontaneous, unrehearsed music. The notes happen so fast that the frontal lobe of the brain – the part responsible for decision-making – doesn’t even have time to join in. (and I know some of you have something cheeky to say about that but hang on to your jazz hatred for just one sec)

This is the thing about improvisation.

It involves IMMENSE trust.

Trust in the capacity to create...without conscious thought or effort.

Musicians are essentially intentionally creating music...without attention. They are opting in and then allowing the creative spirit to move them.

And they have so much trust that they can just get up there, in front of a live audience and throw caution to the wind.

Finding the time as an entrepreneur

Between the job that pays the bills, the kids, the husband, the home schooling, the breakfasts, the lunches and the dinners you might have found 20 minutes at 12:35am to finally do SOMETHING for your business. By the time your head hits the pillow it's 1:30am. You've got 6 hours before you have to get up and do it all over again.

It’s an exhausting way to live and incredibly demotivating. You feel like you're always behind. You're holding it together for now but you're disappointed in how little you're able to get done for your business…the thing you ACTUALLY want to do.

The constant balancing act of work that feeds your family and passion project work is EXHAUSTING.

Making entrepreneurship more fun, one ‘what if’ at a time

Three weeks ago I was walking to my water cooler to grab some water before jumping into an online yoga class with one of my fav studios in Toronto (what up, Mosaic Yoga 👊🏼).

I was in a pretty neutral state of mind. Not happy. Not sad. Just neutral. As I filled my glass with water, I was also multi-tasking with instagram (as one does) for the last few moments before class when I came across a post that caught my attention.

They shared a strategy called the 'wouldn't it be fun' strategy and prompted me to make a list of three pie-in-the-sky things that would be fun to have happen.

I liked this idea. 😏

And so I chose three things and gleefully recited in my head:

"Wouldn't it be fun if..."

5 ways to build creative trust

What do you dream of creating in your lifetime?

For me, entrepreneurship was the dream. I dreamed of autonomy. Freedom. Integrity. And meaningful work.

I didn't just want to clock in and clock out. I didn't want to just do a job. I wanted to make a difference. I wanted to stand for something. I wanted purpose to the ways I was spending my days. I wanted my work to be a reflection of me.

Spilling the Tea: insecurity can be a good thing

4 years ago I moved from Toronto to Vancouver Island.

It had been a move I’d thought about and played with in my head for years. Then a bad breakup serendipitously coupled with an offer from my Aunt and Uncle to dogsit for the winter and I was finally able to pull the trigger.

I subletted my apartment in the city, my dad flew East and we hit the road in my little black Toyota Yaris lovingly named Larry. I packed my guitar, a big tupperware of “essentials” and two bags. Deep down I knew I would be making this a more official move eventually but I wasn’t ready for that quite yet.

A humbling experience

You are not a meat suit.

Neither am I.

I reminded myself of this last week.

It was Wednesday morning. I woke up. Outside the wind was HOWLING. And I don't mean howling. I mean HOWLING.

The trees – massive west coast evergreen trees – were whipping around like shoots of wheat in a prairie field.

And you could hear the rain pelting on the windows.

It had been some time since I had experienced a storm of this calibre.
