5 ways to build creative trust

What do you dream of creating in your lifetime?

For me, entrepreneurship was the dream. I dreamed of autonomy. Freedom. Integrity. And meaningful work.

I didn't want to clock in and clock out. I didn't want to do a job. I wanted to make a difference. I wanted to stand for something. I wanted purpose to the ways I was spending my days. I wanted my work to be a reflection of me.

I have that now but I wouldn't have, if I hadn't learned how to trust in my own creative inklings.

Learning to trust in my own creative spirit – while also developing the skillset of bringing my mind and body on board with the process – has allowed me to do all sorts of things I once questioned as possible.

It allowed me to quit my cushy full-time job in advertising to work for myself as a freelance designer.

To switch careers from one that I liked to one that I LOVE.

To make the decision to move across the country within a 30 day period.

To overcome trauma.

To build a loving relationship with my Type I diabetes (definitely didn't think THAT was possible).

To have incredibly meaningful relationships.

To fully appreciate my life as a single woman while simultaneously holding the dream of partnership.

To tick items off my bucket list, like writing music and teaching.

To develop friendships with ex-lovers.

To have a better relationship with my parents than I thought was possible.

To confidently lead a community of peers in my industry, some of whom are earning 6x my current income.

To develop a growing business that is truly my own.

To make the kind of mark on the world that I'm incredibly proud to make.

All of this came from trust in my creative spirit. Listening to the subtle whispers inside of me and over time, learning to trust in their guidance.

This trust is something that I continue to work and develop because as long as I do, I continue to surprise myself.

I share this as an invitation. You have a brilliant spirit of creativity inside of you too and I'd love to see what you and that spirit can bring into this world.

And so, with that I bring to you 5 simple ways to grow your creative trust.

Read below. Pick one. See where it takes you.

Love ya,

Syd

5 simple ways to grow your creative trust

  1. Pick an everyday task (like making your morning cup of coffee) and give yourself a 7-day challenge. Every morning for 7 days ask yourself “how do I want to create this experience today?” Listen to what your creativity has to say. On Monday it might say that it wants you to move slowly, taking your time with each step. On Tuesday, as you check in with yourself you might notice it asks you to dance part way through. Listen in and allow your creativity to drive the experience of that task from one day to the next. Remember that every action we take can be a creative opportunity.

  2. Set time aside to connect to your creativity in some way, shape or form (even if it’s just 5 mins each weekend). You might write in a journal or doodle. You might meditate. You might exercise. Whatever way helps you to connect inwards to the voice of your creative spirit.

  3. Think about the way that creativity feels in your body. Connect to that feeling and describe it to a partner, friend or journal in as much detail as you can. If you’re unsure, describe what you IMAGINE it feels like.

  4. If you feel blocked, look at it as a sign to take a step back from what you’re working on. Take a walk, listen to a podcast or lie down for a nap. Allow your subconscious mind to take the reigns and give your conscious mind a break.

  5. Trust in the timeline of your project and/or life. You don’t need to know when, you just need to know it’s important to you and you just need to keep showing up for it in whatever ways you are able.
